Hello there, sit back and check out what has been going on with Rice Picker Entertainment |
For those of you who watch Rice Picker Entertainment’s stuff, we recently released a new video called Freedom. The idea came to me while I was learning some 3D origami. The one origami piece that really caught my attention was a rose. As I was practicing and perfecting one of the roses, I got the idea to make a stop action animation of a paper becoming a rose. This brings the thought of something so plain and ordinary can become something beautiful. As I was planning out how to show this, I finally decided to let ideas slowly come through time. So I got to work.
First was the animation portion which was my main goal. I spent nearly 2 hours or more to go from a regular piece of paper to the rose form. However there were some speed bumps during the process. The first was how I was going to flip over the paper to continue the origami folding. Luckily I remembered from Wong Fu’s These Four Walls that Wes did an “invisible” string technique by using floss. Unfortunately I couldn’t strip the floss thin enough, so I just stuck with using the regular thickness. Either way, it helped fix the problem. Second problem was figuring out where to take the story. I finished the animation which was about 400 photos but only equaling about 10 seconds. I wasn’t sure where to go from here.
A few days later, I got the idea that since the paper has already come to life, then the rose should be able to move as well. Thus the rose now was able to move freely. At this point some of the pieces were connecting, but I was missing the key point to why the rose was moving.
My original intention for the plot was to make it a long distance love story. The couple unfortunately break up over an IM chat, but it’s one of the “it’s for the best” break ups. Th girl was intended to be moving to an unnamed place, so the guy thought it would be appropriate to break the relationship after some time. The conversation’s ending was supposed to go something like this:
Guy: I want to send you something to remind you of my love for you
Girl: That’s sweet
Guy: I hope you enjoy it. It’ll be made especially for you
The guy unfortunately can’t bear to create a rose that is perfect for her, so he decides to take a break. That’s when the whole living origami comes in. I spent nearly a month getting footage of the rose moving; most of it was using the string technique. Thanks to Jason Woo, the scenes looked great. Evidently all the footage was to allude to the rose finding its way to the girl who would know that her ex-boyfriend made it for her.
Unfortunately that’s not how the video is now. All the footage sat in my computer for another month and I would only tweak the footage once in awhile. I also wasn’t able to convince any of my friends to play the girlfriend since finals were coming up, so I was rushed to look for an alternative measure.
It finally occurred to me that this video needed to go out now or be forgotten. Then an alternate plot struck me. The idea came through the saying “art becomes life”. Now the story was all connecting. A guy wants his artwork to be alive. It’s the initial feeling artists want; they want their artwork to standout.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video! Please subscribe to Rice Picker Entertainment!
