Hello there, sit back and check out what has been going on with Rice Picker Entertainment |
The latest video I’ve done is a music video to Superchic[k]’s “Stand in the Rain”. This is probably the only music video that I actually spent a good amount of time in pre-production and production. The reason is because there is a big message that my friend, Jennifer, and I wanted to get through the video. This is also my first time actually working with a client outside of the usual production group. Jennifer, a good friend of mine and an aspiring actress, actually was the one who suggested this song for the next music video and came up with the basic concept to the video. Jen and I nearly spent a week or two bouncing ideas back and forth on what to do with the music video.
We didn’t want to do a music video that involved a band performing the song because that seemed a like a last minute thing to throw into the video. Jen really wanted a storyline so we tried our best to interpret the song in order to get a video to match the song’s message. The idea that came in mind was self image issues among girls. Jen and I felt that self image problems tend to happen among adolescent girls more than boys; the fact may not necessarily be true to everyone. We also felt that the issues of self image among girls are a bit more tragic. As you see in the video the self image situations include eating disorders, bullying, and trying to fit in. We agreed upon these issues because they aren’t very harsh, or dark, to display. There was a fine line kept at what would be shown and what our actress was willing to do.
The lead in this video is a good friend of ours named Joanna. She reluctantly took the part out of sheer interest in the concept. Jen became Joanna’s co-star as the “guardian angel” role. The two are good friends already so the friendship chemistry in the video was easy for the two to follow.
Lets start talking a bit more about the video itself. Jen and I wanted to use a mask throughout the video. The mask is supposed to symbolize the insecurity that Joanna has about herself, thus she covers it up. For most of the music video, the mask plays the part that prevents Joanna from accepting who she is. This also played a very important role in the video too since there was no dialogue and the mask would be very helpful, if not Avant-Garde, to carry on the video plot.
The video cuts between past and present. This is a cliche thing to do in order to carry a plot like this. Originally while writing this, I was going to keep everything in a linear structure, but a flashback seemed to be more of a fitting choice. The flashbacks all take place at the fictional high school where Joanna faces all the bullying which leads to her self-conscious ways for not being pretty or “normal” enough to hang with the group of kids seen throughout the flashbacks. As you now know, Jen is the guardian angel in this video; she actually is more of a good Samaritan than a guardian. The one thing you should take note about her character is that she is a part of the “popular” group that bullies Joanna and breaks the group’s status quo. This is a part of the message Jen and I wanted to get across while developing this video along with the main theme of being loved no matter what you’re facing. I’m sure we all have gone through different stages of self-image problems. What we all should take away from the music video is that you are loved no matter what and that you’re perfect in God’s eyes.
